The Indonesian Working Group on Forest Finance (IWGFF) is a Forestry Sector Finance Working Group in Indonesia established with the aim of facilitating the process of implementing economic and financial policies that encourage the creation of sustainable forests, an efficient and healthy forestry industry, and the protection of the rights of forest-dwelling communities.
To achieve its objectives, IWGFF strives to disseminate information and knowledge, engage in dialogue and collaboration with the government and various parties to discuss issues surrounding finance in the forestry sector through research, training, media outreach, and policy dialogue.
During its first year of existence in 2001, the IWGFF has played a role in the struggle for natural resource management, particularly forest resources, by formulating financial issues in the forestry sector that has largely escaped the attention of various groups. These issues include: business debt in the forestry industry; money laundering in illegal logging; investments and loans from financial institutions/donors, both local and international, in the forestry sector.
IWGFF has held meetings and dialogues to contribute ideas to the government and economic and financial authorities such as BPPN, KKSK, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and donor institutions such as the World Bank and IMF to improve and pay attention to economic and financial policies that threaten the existence of Indonesia’s forest resources.
Through the resources of its members, IWGFF has also published several products, namely: Economic Value of Indonesian Production Forests, Study on the Restructuring of the Forestry Industry by IBRA, Investment Screening Tools, Regulatory Manual for the Prevention and Eradication of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, Guidelines for Providing Information on Money Laundering in the Forestry and Natural Resource Conservation Sector, Green Index Investment , and several other research/study products. These products have been distributed to various parties in need. Meanwhile, to expand financial issues in the forestry sector, IWGFF collaborates with parties to create dialogues by presenting resource persons from IWGFF members, government circles, and the Indonesian House of Representatives. IWGFF also strives to build understanding of forest finance issues for the IWGFF network.
As a forum, the IWGFF is an organization comprised of various members, both institutional and individual, who are concerned with policy issues in the financial and forestry sectors in Indonesia. The IWGFF has taken on the role of a group capable of facilitating dialogue with various parties, facilitating various forest finance research, and facilitating the collection of financial data and information in the forestry sector. Through the roles and functions of the IWGFF, supported by the resources of its members, the IWGFF can be managed as a group that can have a strategic bargaining position to conduct dialogues to influence policymakers to encourage the realization of clean governance in the management of healthy and sustainable forest resources.
